מוֹאָב Moab

Son of Lot by his elder daughter after the destruction of Sedom (Genesis 19:37), and the father of the nation that bore his name. Moab lies east of the Dead Sea and appears through the Tanakh as Israel's neighbour and antagonist — Balak hires Bilam there (Numbers 22-24), and Ruth the Moabitess comes from it into the line of David.
כִּֽי־הִקִּיפָה הַזְּעָקָה אֶת־גְּבוּל מוֹאָב עַד־אֶגְלַיִם יִלְלָתָהּ וּבְאֵר אֵילִים יִלְלָתָֽהּ
For the cry is gone round about The borders of Moab; The howling thereof unto Eglaim, And the howling thereof unto Beer-elim.
כִּי מֵי דִימוֹן מָלְאוּ דָם כִּֽי־אָשִׁית עַל־דִּימוֹן נוֹסָפוֹת לִפְלֵיטַת מוֹאָב אַרְיֵה וְלִשְׁאֵרִית אֲדָמָֽה
For the waters of Dimon are full of blood; For I will bring yet more upon Dimon, A lion upon him that escapeth of Moab, And upon the remnant of the land.
וְהָיָה כְעוֹף־נוֹדֵד קֵן מְשֻׁלָּח תִּֽהְיֶינָה בְּנוֹת מוֹאָב מַעְבָּרֹת לְאַרְנֽוֹן
For it shall be that, as wandering birds, As a scattered nest, So shall the daughters of Moab be At the fords of Arnon.
יָגוּרוּ בָךְ נִדָּחַי מוֹאָב הֱוִי־סֵתֶר לָמוֹ מִפְּנֵי שׁוֹדֵד כִּֽי־אָפֵס הַמֵּץ כָּלָה שֹׁד תַּמּוּ רֹמֵס מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ
Let mine outcasts dwell with thee; As for Moab, be thou a covert to him from the face of the spoiler.’ For the extortion is at an end, spoiling ceaseth, They that trampled down are consumed out of the land;
שָׁמַעְנוּ גְאוֹן־מוֹאָב גֵּא מְאֹד גַּאֲוָתוֹ וּגְאוֹנוֹ וְעֶבְרָתוֹ לֹא־כֵן בַּדָּֽיו
We have heard of the pride of Moab; He is very proud; Even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his arrogancy, His ill-founded boastings.

And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab hath wearied himself upon the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail

But now the LORD hath spoken, saying: ‘Within three years, as the years of a hireling, and the glory of Moab shall wax contemptible for all his great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and without strength.’
כִּֽי־תָנוּחַ יַד־יְהוָה בָּהָר הַזֶּה וְנָדוֹשׁ מוֹאָב תַּחְתָּיו כְּהִדּוּשׁ מַתְבֵּן במי מַדְמֵנָֽה
For in this mountain will the hand of the LORD rest, And Moab shall be trodden down in his place, Even as straw is trodden down in the dunghill.
עַל־מִצְרַיִם וְעַל־יְהוּדָה וְעַל־אֱדוֹם וְעַל־בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וְעַל־מוֹאָב וְעַל כָּל־קְצוּצֵי פֵאָה הַיֹּשְׁבִים בַּמִּדְבָּר כִּי כָל־הַגּוֹיִם עֲרֵלִים וְכָל־בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל עַרְלֵי־לֵֽב
Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that have the corners of their hair polled, that dwell in the wilderness; For all the nations are uncircumcised, But all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
אֶת־אֱדוֹם וְאֶת־מוֹאָב וְאֶת־בְּנֵי עַמּֽוֹן
Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon;
וְשִׁלַּחְתָּם אֶל־מֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם וְאֶל־מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב וְאֶל־מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וְאֶל־מֶלֶךְ צֹר וְאֶל־מֶלֶךְ צִידוֹן בְּיַד מַלְאָכִים הַבָּאִים יְרוּשָׁלִַם אֶל־צִדְקִיָּהוּ מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה

וְגַם כָּֽל־הַיְּהוּדִים אֲשֶׁר־בְּמוֹאָב וּבִבְנֵֽי־עַמּוֹן וּבֶאֱדוֹם וַאֲשֶׁר בְּכָל־הָֽאֲרָצוֹת שָֽׁמְעוּ כִּֽי־נָתַן מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶל שְׁאֵרִית לִֽיהוּדָה וְכִי הִפְקִיד עֲלֵיהֶם אֶת־גְּדַלְיָהוּ בֶּן־אֲחִיקָם בֶּן־שָׁפָֽן
Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;
לְמוֹאָב כֹּֽה־אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הוֹי אֶל־נְבוֹ כִּי שֻׁדָּדָה הֹבִישָׁה נִלְכְּדָה קִרְיָתָיִם הֹבִישָׁה הַמִּשְׂגָּב וָחָֽתָּה
Of Moab. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled; Kiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken; Misgab is put to shame and dismayed.
אֵין עוֹד תְּהִלַּת מוֹאָב בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן חָשְׁבוּ עָלֶיהָ רָעָה לְכוּ וְנַכְרִיתֶנָּה מִגּוֹי גַּם־מַדְמֵן תִּדֹּמִּי אַחֲרַיִךְ תֵּלֶךְ חָֽרֶב
The praise of Moab is no more; in Heshbon they have devised evil against her: ‘Come, and let us cut her off from being a nation.’ Thou also, O Madmen, shalt be brought to silence; the sword shall pursue thee.
נִשְׁבְּרָה מוֹאָב הִשְׁמִיעוּ זְּעָקָה צעוריה
Moab is destroyed; Her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
תְּנוּ־צִיץ לְמוֹאָב כִּי נָצֹא תֵּצֵא וְעָרֶיהָ לְשַׁמָּה תִֽהְיֶינָה מֵאֵין יוֹשֵׁב בָּהֵֽן
Give wings unto Moab, For she must fly and get away; And her cities shall become a desolation, Without any to dwell therein.
שַׁאֲנַן מוֹאָב מִנְּעוּרָיו וְשֹׁקֵט הוּא אֶל־שְׁמָרָיו וְלֹֽא־הוּרַק מִכְּלִי אֶל־כֶּלִי וּבַגּוֹלָה לֹא הָלָךְ עַל־כֵּן עָמַד טַעְמוֹ בּוֹ וְרֵיחוֹ לֹא נָמָֽר
Moab hath been at ease from his youth, And he hath settled on his lees, And hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, Neither hath he gone into captivity; Therefore his taste remaineth in him, And his scent is not changed.
וּבֹשׁ מוֹאָב מִכְּמוֹשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר־בֹּשׁוּ בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל מִבֵּית אֵל מִבְטֶחָֽם
And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, As the house of Israel was ashamed Of Beth-el their confidence.
שֻׁדַּד מוֹאָב וְעָרֶיהָ עָלָה וּמִבְחַר בַּֽחוּרָיו יָרְדוּ לַטָּבַח נְאֻם־הַמֶּלֶךְ יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת שְׁמֽוֹ
Moab is spoiled, and they are gone up into her cities, And his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, Saith the King, Whose name is the LORD of hosts.
קָרוֹב אֵיד־מוֹאָב לָבוֹא וְרָעָתוֹ מִהֲרָה מְאֹֽד
The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.
רְדִי מִכָּבוֹד ישבי בַצָּמָא יֹשֶׁבֶת בַּת־דִּיבוֹן כִּֽי־שֹׁדֵד מוֹאָב עָלָה בָךְ שִׁחֵת מִבְצָרָֽיִךְ
O thou daughter that dwellest in Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab is come up against thee, He hath destroyed thy strongholds.
הֹבִישׁ מוֹאָב כִּֽי־חַתָּה הילילי וזעקי הַגִּידוּ בְאַרְנוֹן כִּי שֻׁדַּד מוֹאָֽב
Moab is put to shame, for it is dismayed; wail and cry; tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled.
הֹבִישׁ מוֹאָב כִּֽי־חַתָּה הילילי וזעקי הַגִּידוּ בְאַרְנוֹן כִּי שֻׁדַּד מוֹאָֽב

וְעַל־קְרִיּוֹת וְעַל־בָּצְרָה וְעַל כָּל־עָרֵי אֶרֶץ מוֹאָב הָרְחֹקוֹת וְהַקְּרֹבֽוֹת
and upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
נִגְדְּעָה קֶרֶן מוֹאָב וּזְרֹעוֹ נִשְׁבָּרָה נְאֻם יְהוָֽה
The horn of Moab is cut off, And his arm is broken, Saith the LORD.
הַשְׁכִּירֻהוּ כִּי עַל־יְהוָה הִגְדִּיל וְסָפַק מוֹאָב בְּקִיאוֹ וְהָיָה לִשְׂחֹק גַּם־הֽוּא
Make ye him drunken, For he magnified himself against the LORD; And Moab shall wallow in his vomit, And he also shall be in derision.
עִזְבוּ עָרִים וְשִׁכְנוּ בַּסֶּלַע יֹשְׁבֵי מוֹאָב וִֽהְיוּ כְיוֹנָה תְּקַנֵּן בְּעֶבְרֵי פִי־פָֽחַת
O ye that dwell in Moab, Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock; And be like the dove that maketh her nest In the sides of the pit’s mouth.
שָׁמַעְנוּ גְאוֹן־מוֹאָב גֵּאֶה מְאֹד גָּבְהוֹ וּגְאוֹנוֹ וְגַאֲוָתוֹ וְרֻם לִבּֽוֹ

וְנֶאֶסְפָה שִׂמְחָה וָגִיל מִכַּרְמֶל וּמֵאֶרֶץ מוֹאָב וְיַיִן מִיקָבִים הִשְׁבַּתִּי לֹֽא־יִדְרֹךְ הֵידָד הֵידָד לֹא הֵידָֽד
And gladness and joy is taken away From the fruitful field, and from the land of Moab; And I have caused wine to cease from the winepresses; None shall tread with shouting; The shouting shall be no shouting.
וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי לְמוֹאָב נְאֻם־יְהוָה מַעֲלֶה בָמָה וּמַקְטִיר לֵאלֹהָֽיו
Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, Saith the LORD, Him that offereth in the high place, And him that offereth to his gods.
עַל־כֵּן לִבִּי לְמוֹאָב כַּחֲלִלִים יֶהֱמֶה וְלִבִּי אֶל־אַנְשֵׁי קִֽיר־חֶרֶשׂ כַּחֲלִילִים יֶהֱמֶה עַל־כֵּן יִתְרַת עָשָׂה אָבָֽדוּ
Therefore my heart moaneth for Moab Like pipes, and my heart moaneth like pipes for the men of Kir-heres; Therefore the abundance that he hath gotten is perished.
עַל כָּל־גַּגּוֹת מוֹאָב וּבִרְחֹבֹתֶיהָ כֻּלֹּה מִסְפֵּד כִּֽי־שָׁבַרְתִּי אֶת־מוֹאָב כִּכְלִי אֵֽין־חֵפֶץ בּוֹ נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה
On all the housetops of Moab and in the broad places thereof There is lamentation every where; For I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, Saith the LORD.
עַל כָּל־גַּגּוֹת מוֹאָב וּבִרְחֹבֹתֶיהָ כֻּלֹּה מִסְפֵּד כִּֽי־שָׁבַרְתִּי אֶת־מוֹאָב כִּכְלִי אֵֽין־חֵפֶץ בּוֹ נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה

כִּי־כֹה אָמַר יְהוָה הִנֵּה כַנֶּשֶׁר יִדְאֶה וּפָרַשׂ כְּנָפָיו אֶל־מוֹאָֽב
For thus saith the LORD: Behold, he shall swoop as a vulture, And shall spread out his wings against Moab.
נִלְכְּדָה הַקְּרִיּוֹת וְהַמְּצָדוֹת נִתְפָּשָׂה וְֽהָיָה לֵב גִּבּוֹרֵי מוֹאָב בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא כְּלֵב אִשָּׁה מְצֵרָֽה
The cities are taken, And the strongholds are seized, And the heart of the mighty men of Moab at that day Shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
וְנִשְׁמַד מוֹאָב מֵעָם כִּי עַל־יְהוָה הִגְדִּֽיל
And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, Because he hath magnified himself against the LORD.
פַּחַד וָפַחַת וָפָח עָלֶיךָ יוֹשֵׁב מוֹאָב נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה
Terror, and the pit, and the trap, Are upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, Saith the LORD.
הניס מִפְּנֵי הַפַּחַד יִפֹּל אֶל־הַפַּחַת וְהָֽעֹלֶה מִן־הַפַּחַת יִלָּכֵד בַּפָּח כִּֽי־אָבִיא אֵלֶיהָ אֶל־מוֹאָב שְׁנַת פְּקֻדָּתָם נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה
He that fleeth from the terror Shall fall into the pit; And he that getteth up out of the pit Shall be taken in the trap; For I will bring upon her, even upon Moab, The year of their visitation, saith the LORD.
בְּצֵל חֶשְׁבּוֹן עָמְדוּ מִכֹּחַ נָסִים כִּֽי־אֵשׁ יָצָא מֵחֶשְׁבּוֹן וְלֶֽהָבָה מִבֵּין סִיחוֹן וַתֹּאכַל פְּאַת מוֹאָב וְקָדְקֹד בְּנֵי שָׁאֽוֹן
In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives Stand without strength; For a fire is gone forth out of Heshbon, And a flame from the midst of Sihon, And it devoureth the corner of Moab, And the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones. .
אוֹי־לְךָ מוֹאָב אָבַד עַם־כְּמוֹשׁ כִּֽי־לֻקְּחוּ בָנֶיךָ בַּשֶּׁבִי וּבְנֹתֶיךָ בַּשִּׁבְיָֽה
Woe unto thee, O Moab! The people of Chemosh is undone; For thy sons are taken away captive, And thy daughters into captivity.
וְשַׁבְתִּי שְׁבוּת־מוֹאָב בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים נְאֻם־יְהוָה עַד־הֵנָּה מִשְׁפַּט מוֹאָֽב
Yet will I turn the captivity of Moab In the end of days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
