Third son of Yaakov and Leah, whose descendants became the tribe set apart for the priesthood and the service of the Mishkan (Exodus, Numbers). With Shimon he avenged the violation of Dinah at Shechem (Genesis 34). His name plays on the Hebrew root for “joining,” used in Leah's own words at his birth (Genesis 29:34), so the count includes both uses.
