Anointed at Elisha's word to end the house of Achav, he drove his chariot “furiously” to Yizreel, killed Yoram and Izevel and destroyed the worshippers of Baal in Shomron (2 Kings 9-10). Four generations were promised him on Israel's throne, though he did not turn from the calves of Yaravam. The name is also that of a prophet who rebuked Baasha.
