Son of Tzeruyah and brother of Yoav, one of David's chief warriors. He went down with David into Shaul's camp by night and wanted to pin the sleeping king to the ground with his own spear; David would not have it (1 Samuel 26). He killed three hundred with his spear and saved David from a giant.

וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל־אֲבִישַׁי אַל־תַּשְׁחִיתֵהוּ כִּי מִי שָׁלַח יָדוֹ בִּמְשִׁיחַ יְהוָה וְנִקָּֽה
And David said to Abishai: ‘Destroy him not; for who can put forth his hand against the LORD’S anointed, and be guiltless?’
